That's not "fair"!

Over Christmas break, My Mom and sister convinced me that Bare Minerals make-up was something I ought to try. Being that it is all natural and lightweight, I decided to try it. As My Mom and I walked into the Ulta store, I noticed the colorful array of packages that I could purchase. This took me back to the old school Mary Kay parties where you were to decide which "color family" or "season" your skin tones aligned with. (I still don't understand that!) So, as I perused the counter with the color packages, I looked to my far left to see....the dreaded......FAIR complexion package. "Surely not..." I thought. "I must be a light....or porcelain, even....but not fair....." When the store clerk helped me find the correct shade, indeed, I was classified as "fair". Boo. In a world where tan is beautiful, no girl wants to be the FAR end of the spectrum away from the coveted "bronze" minerals. So, I sucked up my pride and bought the fair make-up.

As I get older, I really want to embrace the things about me that I am not naturally inclined to love. My pale complexion is a great example of this. (I have, at least, moved past the dream I used to have to be a blonde!) Yesterday, as I watched the newly released movie, "Bride Wars", I noticed how beautifully Anne Hathaway "owns" her paleness. She wasn't tanned for her role in the movie...and she looked amazing. Maybe it was her make-up choices, maybe her clothes. My best guess? She is confident and content about the way she was made.

Might we all "own" the things that we might not love about ourselves so as to bring glory to the One who created us in His image.

  2. Girl, I have to use the fair, also. And, the worst part is that when I started wearing Bare Minerals a few years ago, they didn't make the "kit" with fair. Only the light and medium shades. I had to buy the pieces individually, shelling out more cash. It really wasn't "fair." Although, I'm with you...I've recently been able to embrace it a bit more. :)
