Book #2

I am still working on this one, but I have already really enjoyed "For Women Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn. The subtitle of the book is "What you need to know about the inner lives of men". Why wouldn't a girl want to pick this up?

While I can't say that this book was very different from "Love and Respect" by Emerson Eggerichs, I am enjoying the insight that Feldhahn brings to the topic. A statistician, she interviewed over 1,000 men from all walks of life to hear what they thought were the key principles that women don't understand about men.

Here are a few quotes that I underlined:

"In a relationship conflict, crying is often a woman's response to feeling unloved, and anger is often a man's response to feeling disrespected." (I tend to think that anger is a more sinful response than tears...but this makes a lot of sense to me in this particular context.)

"I would argue that it is not the average man who needs to be less sensitive to the woman's words, but the average woman who needs to be more sensitive to her man's feelings." This theory is woven through the entire first 5 chapters....if a man is not feeling respected at home, the rest of his worldly successes are going to be compromised. The building up and affirming he receives from his wife is critical to his confidence in all other areas of life.

"In Ephesians 5 it never tells the wife to love the husband, and it never tells the husband to respect his wife (presumably because we already tend to give what we want to receive). Instead, over and over, it urges the husband to love his wife and urges the wife to respect her husband and his leadership." Great point.

Hope you are enjoying my Cliff's Notes....

  1. Hey Lauren! I just finished this, and I actually found it to be one of the more helpful and insightful marraige/relationship books that I have read. I love that she brings both a scientific and spiritual perspective to the issues. I've seen the book for years and never picked it up b/c the title seemed so cheesy, but I stand corrected. Hope you are doing well!

  2. I totally agree, Sara! I, too, was cheesed out by the title but was told from many women I respect to give it a read. I am glad I did!
Hope all is well with you!!
